Medical device design internship completed at St. James's Design Innovation Lab from September 2024 to January 2025. I worked on multiple projects during this time. However, due to the signing of an NDA, majority of the work cannot be displayed, therefore this section will focus on the skills I developed, events and exhibitions I attended and facilitated, and small project pieces I worked on.
PROJECT WORK
3D Printing
3D printing became the backbone of my prototyping process at the La. This was my first hands-on experience with the machines, and one that quickly extended into material decision-making: choosing filaments based on the structural, tactile, and functional demands of each component.
Laser Cutting and Line Bending
One of my projects at the Lab was built almost entirely through laser cutting and line bending. Working with these processes repeatedly over the internship gave me a much more intuitive understanding of material behaviour and how the technology within a laser cutter works
EVENTS & EXHIBITIONS
Design Thinking Workshop
I was brought alongside Conall and Carolina to facilitate a design thinking workshop held in Trinity College for fellowship students. This was to introduce Trinity academics to the design process designers use, and helping them understand how to apply those methods to their research projects.
Science Fair
The science fair, held on November 22nd, was aimed towards primary school children aged 11 and 12 coming from a local school, with low levels of students undertaking third level education . This was an event hosted alongside multiple other departments such as nursing, medicine, physio etc. I hosted the engineering stand. I brought some fun prints for the kids, a prosthesis prints, and one of our Prusa printers.

Ten Years of Design in St. James's Hospital
To participate in helping with the event, I was tasked with making souvenirs for guests to take home, doing initial planning on invites and the floor planning, along with a rough mock up of the timeline while also brainstorming more ideas. We landed on Christmas ornaments of our logo as souvenirs.
